weatherization
The U.S. Department of Energy's Weatherization Assistance Program enables low-income families to permanently reduce their energy bills by making their homes more energy efficient. The Utah Weatherization Assistance Program is administered through nine government and nonprofit agencies across the state. It enables qualified low-income individuals and families to make their homes more energy efficient and reduce utility costs. Individuals, families, elderly people, and the handicapped at or below 125% of the federal poverty income guidelines are eligible for Weatherization assistance.
Through this program, Weatherization installs energy efficiency measures in the homes of qualifying residents free of charge. These are not expensive upgrades, but they are effective - participating households nationally are averaging a savings of over 30% on energy consumption, around $400 per year in Utah.
Weatherization provides crucial support to some of society's neediest citizens, at the same time reducing energy dependency, improving the environment, and stimulating economic development in lower-income communities.
Both owner-occupied and rental units are eligible for Weatherization. Services are determined following a detailed energy audit of each home. Services include:
- Furnace replacement
- Insulation
- Air sealing
- Refrigerator replacement
Weatherization information is provided by the Utah Division of Housing and Community Development. Weatherization assistance is provided locally throughout the state by various government and nonprofit agencies, including six of our Community Action Agencies.
